A thin molecule of gold, or something that leaves a gold color, is placed on a metal. The color can wear off depending on the acidity of the wearer's skin and the pollutants in the air. Gold filled is created by bonding a thin layer of real gold over another metal, like brass or copper. This process is called heat-and-pressure bonding. It wears off much slower than jewelry that is plated.
